2011 Brooklyn Marathon

Sunday, November 20, 2011 will be remembered as the inaugural running of the “other” marathon in New York – the Brooklyn Marathon. 262 runners completed the 26.2 miles course in Prospect Park on a beautiful sunny day. Every runner was more than thrilled to be participating in the first Brooklyn Marathon. Even with having to run six laps around Prospect Park. It truly was an exciting and memorable day in New York running and the runners felt it. I had the opportunity to be in charge of the course marshals. We had a great group of course marshals. They did not want to be relieved even after hours of standing out on the course. The course marshals stayed out there cheering on the runners. That was awesome. The best part of running an inaugural marathon is that two runners have the chance to become the first male and female finishers in the events’ history and set the course records. The first runner to cross the finish line and male winner was John Paul Montes, 24, Carroll Gardens, 2:43:13. The first woman finisher was Kelly Gillen, 29, New York, 3:14:20.
